Food scientist and New York Times columnist Harold McGee writes about a research study on microbial transfer to dip bowls when folks who are snacking "double-dip" -- that is, if they use a chip to have a bite of tasty guacamole, then dip the remains of their chip back into the communal bowl.
In short: Microbes do get transfered back into the dip bowl, but no one knows whether this puts anyone at increased risk of disease.
Here's a good basic guacamole recipe. If you make it, though, add a bit more garlic.
