Urban researchers complain about increasing and omnipresent<br \/>\n\tsurveillance methods in as well as extensive privatization of public<br \/>\n\tareas. The discussion about the decline in public space also focuses on<br \/>\n\tthe ubiquity of advertising messages in urban space and the so called<br \/>\n\t\u201carchitecture of control\u201d that subtly instructs urban residents\u2019<br \/>\n\tbehavior. Entering the aforementioned key words on google it brings up<br \/>\n\thundreds of books, papers, essays, articles, lectures, panel discussions<br \/>\n\tetc. about the incorrect, contorted or ruined form of public space.<br \/>\n\tWalking around several European or North American cities with a vigilant<br \/>\n\teye though, you can find a lot of interventions that face these<br \/>\n\ttendencies creatively with <em>direct actions:\u00a0<\/em>billboards turned to<br \/>\n\tplant-holders, self-made zebra crossings and bike lanes,\u00a0parking lots<br \/>\n\tconverted into picnic areas, \u2026\u00a0In this and future posts I want to give<br \/>\n\tan overview about these direct actions, so called \u201cUrban Hacks\u201d, as a<br \/>\n\treaction to the loss of public space and show their value in terms of<br \/>\n\tprotecting its ideal forms.<br \/>\n\t[&#8230;]<br \/>\n\tA couple of months ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.inpolis.com\/author\/valentinschipfer\/\">Valentin<\/a> gave a very nice introduction to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.inpolis.com\/2012\/02\/17\/pop-up-urbanism-a-new-term\/\">Pop-Up-Urbanism<\/a><br \/>\n\tand showed several examples of how residents install temporary add-ons<br \/>\n\tin the city in order to reactivate distressed or vacant space and also<br \/>\n\tto fulfill their needs within their urban environment. Urban Hacking<br \/>\n\tgoes a bit further than that and is a direct reaction to developments in<br \/>\n\tthe city Urban Hackers see as threatening public space. Following the<br \/>\n\tbook <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.de\/Urban-Hacking-Cultural-Strategies-Modernity\/dp\/3837615367\">&#8220;Urban Hacking.
