In early 2011, monochrom<\/a> will make one of humanity\u2019s old dreams come true: an improv reality sitcom for theater stages portraying the first year of operation of the ISS (International Space Station).<\/p>\n

The show will depict day-to-day working life in outer space. What is it like to live and work under the special conditions (and impairments) of a space station, to come to terms with weightlessness and the dictatorship of the functional? What is one to do, when any little thing that needs to get done costs 150,000 dollars? And all the while the national debt is continually setting new record highs. How, under such conditions, can you deal with having banal little everyday problems, and with (not) solving them?

We are looking for<\/p>\n

\n\t– two male actors, English native speakers (for the roles of the two “Americans”)
\n\t– a male actor, Russian native speaker (for the role of the “Russian”)
\n\t– a female actor, French native speaker (for the role of the “French Canadian”)<\/p>\n

\tRequirements: good English and German skills, experience with improv theater, you can work in Vienna\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Why space flight?<\/p>\n

\n\tLife and work on the ISS, the largest international space station ever, has almost nothing to do with the lifestyle of adventure and exploration portrayed on TV shows like Star Trek. The station\u2019s crew works under the difficult conditions of outer space, where existence is governed by adapting to the limitations imposed by weightlessness, cramped quarters and complex record keeping. Earthly comfort and the things we take for granted in everyday life can only be provided for through makeshift simulation.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Why sitcom?<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dramatic conventions of the sitcom correspond to the everyday life of people who spend an extended period of time on a space station. The latter is an unending sequence of detailed and strictly regulated tasks, leaving little room for anything unexpected. The adventure faced by the ISS crew is not to confront any fantastic events arising from the unknown depths beyond the airlock, but to come to terms with the trials of close confinement as a group while maintaining the communicative status quo between crew members.

\nIm Fr\u00fchjahr 2011 werden monochrom<\/a> einen alten Menschheitstraum wahr werden lassen: Eine Impro-Reality-Sitcom f\u00fcr Theaterb\u00fchnen, die das erste Jahr auf der ISS (“International Space Station”) schildert.<\/p>\n

Geschildert wird der Arbeitsalltag im All. Wie lebt und arbeitet es sich unter den besonderen Bedingungen (und Beeintr\u00e4chtigungen) einer Raumstation, unter Schwerelosigkeit und der Diktatur des Funktionalen? Was tun, wenn alles, was zu tun ist, gleich mal 150.000 Dollar kostet \u2013 und die Staatsneuverschuldung noch nie so hoch war wie heute. Wie kann es gelingen, unter solchen Bedingungen, banale und alltagstypische Problemchen zu haben und (nicht) zu l\u00f6sen.
\nDer Weltraum ist im Prinzip ein Arbeitszimmer, indem niemand unser Schreien h\u00f6rt.<\/p>\n

Warum Raumfahrt?<\/p>\n

\n\tArbeit und Leben auf der bislang gr\u00f6\u00dften internationalen Raumstation ISS (International Space Station) \u00e4hneln kaum dem glamour\u00f6sen Abenteuerleben, wie es Serien wie “Star Trek” entworfen haben. Ihre Besatzung arbeitet unter den erschwerten Bedingungen des Weltraums: Schwerelosigkeit, Platzmangel und komplexe Protokolle zeichnen sich eher durch (\u00fcberlebensnotwendige) Beschr\u00e4nkung aus, als neue Erfahrungsr\u00e4ume aufzuschlie\u00dfen. Irdischer Komfort und allt\u00e4gliche Selbstverst\u00e4ndlichkeiten m\u00fcssen unter erheblichem Kostenaufwand mehr recht als schlecht simuliert werden.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Warum Sitcom?<\/p>\n

\n\tDie Darstellungskonventionen der Sitcom entsprechen dem Alltag von Menschen, die sich f\u00fcr einen l\u00e4ngeren Zeitraum auf einer Raumstation befinden. Dieser ist eine Aneinanderreihung kleinteiliger und streng reglementierter Vollz\u00fcge, die wenig Platz lassen f\u00fcr den Einbruch des Unbekannten. Die Abenteuer, die auf der ISS zu bestehen sind, haben eher mit der Aufrechterhaltung des gruppenkommunikativen Status Quo und der gemeinsamen Eingeschlossenheit zu tun, weniger mit fantastischen Ereignissen, die aus den unbekannten Tiefen des Raums an die Crewmitglieder herantreten.
