\n\tWhat do these words and phrases have in common? Friend<\/em>, Google<\/em>, TiVo<\/em>, log in<\/em>, contact<\/em>, barbecue<\/em>, unlike<\/em>, concept<\/em>, text<\/em>, Photoshop<\/em>, leverage<\/em>, party<\/em>, Xerox<\/em>, reference<\/em>, architect<\/em>, parent<\/em>, improv<\/em>, transition<\/em>, diligence<\/em>, host<\/em>, chair<\/em>, gift<\/em>, heart<\/em>, impact<\/em>?<\/p>\n

\tThey’ve all been declared–by someone,
\n\tsomewhere, whether a usage expert or just a self-appointed language
\n\tcop–“not verbs.” It doesn’t matter whether they’re useful, interesting,
\n\tor entertaining as verbs; to many people, if a word began its life as a
\n\tnoun, then “verbing” it (like I did there) is just wrong<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\tThis visceral reaction is the motivating force behind the recently popular loginisnotaverb.com<\/a>, one man’s impassioned plea against this kind of verbing. The site’s elaborate (and funny) arguments against login’<\/em>s
\n\tverb status really boil down to a simple denial. “I will repeat the
\n\timportant part for clarity: ‘login’ is not a verb. It’s simply not,” he
\n\twrites.<\/p>\n

\tThe history of
\n\tEnglish, however, suggests that the language is remarkably flexible in
\n\tterms of what can be verbed. Almost any word can be drafted to serve as a
\n\tverb, even words we think of as eternal and unchanging, stuck in their
\n\tmore traditional roles. It’s easy to think of scenarios where “She me’d<\/em> him too much and they broke up” and “My boss tomorrowed<\/em> the meeting again” make sense.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
