{"id":11643,"date":"2010-07-26T18:11:10","date_gmt":"2010-07-26T16:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mono-1en-2374"},"modified":"2010-07-26T18:11:10","modified_gmt":"2010-07-26T16:11:10","slug":"verbing-nouns-such-as-verb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/monochrom.at\/blog\/2010\/07\/26\/verbing-nouns-such-as-verb\/","title":{"rendered":"Verbing Nouns (Such as &#8216;Verb&#8217;)"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>\n\tWhat do these words and phrases have in common? <em>Friend<\/em>, <em>Google<\/em>, <em>TiVo<\/em>, <em>log in<\/em>, <em>contact<\/em>, <em>barbecue<\/em>, <em>unlike<\/em>, <em>concept<\/em>, <em>text<\/em>, <em>Photoshop<\/em>, <em>leverage<\/em>, <em>party<\/em>, <em>Xerox<\/em>, <em>reference<\/em>, <em>architect<\/em>, <em>parent<\/em>, <em>improv<\/em>, <em>transition<\/em>, <em>diligence<\/em>, <em>host<\/em>, <em>chair<\/em>, <em>gift<\/em>, <em>heart<\/em>, <em>impact<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>\tThey&#8217;ve all been declared&#8211;by someone,<br \/>\n\tsomewhere, whether a usage expert or just a self-appointed language<br \/>\n\tcop&#8211;&#8220;not verbs.&#8221; It doesn&#8217;t matter whether they&#8217;re useful, interesting,<br \/>\n\tor entertaining as verbs; to many people, if a word began its life as a<br \/>\n\tnoun, then &#8220;verbing&#8221; it (like I did there) is <em>just wrong<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\tThis visceral reaction is the motivating force behind the recently popular <a href=\"http:\/\/loginisnotaverb.com\/\">loginisnotaverb.com<\/a>, one man&#8217;s impassioned plea against this kind of verbing. The site&#8217;s elaborate (and funny) arguments against <em>login&#8217;<\/em>s<br \/>\n\tverb status really boil down to a simple denial. &#8220;I will repeat the<br \/>\n\timportant part for clarity: &#8216;login&#8217; is not a verb. It&#8217;s simply not,&#8221; he<br \/>\n\twrites.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe history of<br \/>\n\tEnglish, however, suggests that the language is remarkably flexible in<br \/>\n\tterms of what can be verbed. Almost any word can be drafted to serve as a<br \/>\n\tverb, even words we think of as eternal and unchanging, stuck in their<br \/>\n\tmore traditional roles. It&#8217;s easy to think of scenarios where &#8220;She <em>me&#8217;d<\/em> him too much and they broke up&#8221; and &#8220;My boss <em>tomorrowed<\/em> the meeting again&#8221; make sense.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bostonglobe\/ideas\/articles\/2010\/07\/25\/verbed\/\">Link<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do these words and phrases have in common?
