A group of evolutionary thinkers offer an answer by revising one of psychology&#8217;s most familiar images.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n\tAbraham Maslow&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abraham-maslow.com\/m_motivation\/Hierarchy_of_Needs.asp\">Pyramid of Needs<\/a> is one of the iconic images of<br \/>\n\tpsychology. The simple diagram, first introduced in the 1940s, spells<br \/>\n\tout the underlying motivations that drive our day-to-day behavior and<br \/>\n\tpoints the way to a more meaningful life. It is elegant, approachable<br \/>\n\tand uplifting.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut is it also out of date?\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThat\u2019s the argument of a team of evolutionary psychologists led by <a href=\"http:\/\/kenrick.socialpsychology.org\/\">Douglas Kenrick<\/a> of Arizona State University. In the<br \/>\n\tlatest issue of the journal <em>Perspectives on Psychological Science<\/em>,<br \/>\n\tthey propose a revised pyramid, one informed by recent research<br \/>\n\tdefining our deep biological <a href=\"http:\/\/pps.sagepub.com\/content\/5\/3\/292.abstract\">drives<\/a>.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTheir new formulation is intellectually stimulating, but emotionally<br \/>\n\tdeflating. &#8220;Self-actualization,&#8221; the noble-sounding top layer of<br \/>\n\tMaslow&#8217;s hierarchy, in their model has not only been dethroned, it has<br \/>\n\tbeen relegated to footnote status. It has been replaced at the top with a<br \/>\n\tmore mundane motivation Maslow didn&#8217;t even mention: &#8220;Parenting.&#8221;\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.miller-mccune.com\/culture\/maslows-pyramid-gets-a-makeover-17782\/\">Link<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are the fundamental forces that drive human behavior?
