\n\tI’m a practicing psychiatrist, not a research
\n\tpsychologist, but as someone who follows the literature on happiness,
\n\tI’m convinced that How Pleasure Works<\/a><\/em> is a comprehensive and
\n\tauthoritative summary of, to quote the subtitle, “The New Science of Why
\n\tWe Like What We Like.” It’s also a gracefully written book and a lot of
\n\tfun, not least because, as the tour guide, you’re great company. Who
\n\telse, considering the ancient philosophical question of what defines the
\n\thuman race, would venture, “Man is the only animal that likes Tabasco
\n\tsauce?”<\/p>\n\tBeyond being bold and outlandish, that sort of statement is important because
\n\tit recognizes that human pleasure is complex. You’re moving a step
\n\tbeyond the now-familiar psychology that says we’re obese because when
\n\tour ancestors roamed the grasslands, the survivors were the ones
\n\tprogrammed to enjoy sweets, such as ripe fruits, when they were
\n\tavailable. Our liking spice might call for a higher-level explanation,
