October 2-5, 2014 in San Francisco, USA.<\/p>\n

Call for talks, performances, games, workshops, machines, systems!<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

\n\tTrans is a Latin noun or prefix, meaning “across”, “beyond” or “on the
\n\topposite side”. What does that mean for sex and technology?
\n\t– Transitions, translations, transgressions, transistors &
\n\ttransducers, transactions, transmission (specifically sexually
\n\ttransmitted infections), transdermal?
\n\t– How does sex change as we age? As we grow, as we mature? And what
\n\tabout old age? Sex in nursing homes? Sex when people have lost much of
\n\ttheir sense of identity with Alzheimer’s Disease and the like, but are
\n\tstill horny, still sexual entities? How do pharma and biotech
\n\thelp\/monetize this situation?
\n\t– Sex under drugs, sex under other altered states? Is Viagra a drug? At
\n\twhat point does a loss of cognitive function take away our ability to
\n\tconsent?
\n\t– Transnationality and sex. What about translations and transitions
\n\tacross cultures? For example: Hacking, porn, dissent in Iran? Purity
\n\tBalls and the American obsession with virginity whatever that really
\n\tmeans?
\n\t– How does our sex and our perception of sex change with the
\n\tintroduction of new gadgets? Who are the early (sexual) adopters? And
\n\twhat about the adapters? What about (white male) privilege and new
\n\tgadgets? Google Glass Ceiling?
\n\t– SCOT (social construction of technology) research, such as that of
\n\tMackenzie and Wajcman, argues that the path of innovation and its social
\n\tconsequences are strongly, if not entirely shaped by society itself
\n\tthrough the influence of culture, politics, economic arrangements,
\n\tregulatory mechanisms and the like. So if its true that technology
\n\titself doesnt matter, but the social or economic system in which it is
\n\tembedded (Langdon Winner), then what does that tell us about the
\n\ttransition from sex tech into the cultural mainstream?
\n\t– Is human sexual behavior transforming our planet? What’s the sexual side of the anthropocene?
\n\t– Transgression and mechanophila? Is our technological society driven by
\n\terotogenic fixation on machinery? What about hardcore pornography such
\n\tas Fucking Machines? Can this be seen as constituting the limit of
\n\tcurrent sexual biopolitics?
\n\t– Sex puppets, Real Dolls and the Uncanny Valley? A never-ending transition?
\n\t– Teagan Widmer’s latest app, Refuge Restrooms, highlights the
\n\timportance of providing safe public accommodations for trans people. How
\n\tcan apps like Widmers help with tasks that most people take for
\n\tgranted, like the ability to use the bathroom?
\n\t– Is trans* a controversial label online? How do we develop
\n\tlanguage-theory-activism in general? Programming languages are designed
\n\tto be inclusive of “trans” in a broad sense for both binary and
\n\tnon-binary gender modalities. Does it have transmisogynist qualities?
\n\t– Feminists, among other critical scholars, have long argued the
\n\tproblems with the notion of the Transcendental. Focusing on the
\n\ttranscendental moves our attention away from the day-to-day struggles
\n\tinvolving the material and instead replaces it with transcendent ideas
\n\tand ideals. How is this manifested through issues of sexuality and
\n\ttechnology? What can we do about it? What are the power struggles
\n\tinvolved, positionalities afforded and relationships to, that
\n\ttranscendental modes of thought afford for socio-economically
\n\tmarginalized populations? Can we compare and contrast notions of
\n\ttranscendence alongside notions of immanence? What is the role of the
\n\tbody and embodiment with respect to transcendentalism? What are the
\n\timplications of transcendental for power? Grassroots activism? Citizens’
\n\tmovements? Open source? Hacking? Can we have visions of the future
\n\twithout being transcendental?
\n\t– And, last but not least, since sex is a pretty biological thing
\n\t(insofar as things are biological things), we want to remind of genetics
\n\twith our theme. Genetic
\n\ttransformation\/translation\/transcription\/transmission.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
