\n\tSince the advent of modernism, artists have repeatedly attempted to
\n\tcounteract the conflation of work and subject, because they have seen
\n\tthemselves forced into an undesired role: that of a freedom and
\n\tindependence whose flip side is isolation and powerlessness. While the
\n\tworkers of the Fordist factory developed forms of collective struggle,
\n\tthe particular form of artists\u2019 existence \u2013 productive eccentricity and
\n\tmanic-depressive individualism \u2013 hindered any attempt to organize and
\n\tpush through demands that would improve the precarious conditions of
\n\ttheir life and work. As individuals who had been condemned to autonomy,
\n\tthey faced great difficulties in escaping from the prison of their
\n\tfreedom.<\/p>\n

\tContext hacking transfers the hackers\u2019 objectives and methods to the
\n\tnetwork of social relationships in which artistic production occurs, and
\n\tupon which it is dependent. In a metaphoric sense, these relationships
\n\talso have a source code. Programs run in them, and our interaction with
\n\tthem is structured by a user interface. When we know how a space, a
\n\tniche, a scene, a subculture or a media or political practice functions,
\n\twe can change it and \u00bbrecode\u00ab it, deconstructing its power
\n\trelationships and emancipating ourselves from its compulsions and
\n\tpackaging guidelines.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
